NWS Cast #006 by our friend Mikkel Metal

Three months ago I asked Mikkel Meldgaard aka Mikkel Metal if he wanted to make a mix for NWS. The reason I asked this dubtechno king about a mix for a house music cast, is because I saw him play some housetracks in the basement at Culture Box, and it made an impression! His excellent production skills and critical ears most certainly effects his trackselection which is amazing! In this mix Mikkel gives you an insight to his deep house recordcollection, and whether you are new to the genre or old in the game you will love these tracks! Exquisite selection and personal presentation of house that goes beyond deep!
I asked Mikkel a few questions:

Q: You usually produce and mix dub techno and ambient. What are we in for here with this mix?

A: As requested it's a mix of more or less house. And since this lies a little outside the genres I primarily work in, I thought it could be interesting.

Q: You have had a long carrier on Echocord with remixes from Marcel Dettmann, Mick Huckaby and Cassy to name a few. Do you have a release you are particularly nostalgic about?

A: I would have to say Echocord 02. This record still has a special place for me.

Q: Why is this special to you?

A: For nostalgic reasons: It reminds me very much of a periode in my life. But also because it contains some very personal and refined electronic music.

Q: What is in store for the future?

A: I've got some releases scheduled for the beginning of 2011. A 12' on echocord, a track on the echocord 50 compilation and a track on Kompakt's Pop Ambient 2011. Besides that I'm working on a lot of new material in different genres. So hopefully some of this will end up in new releases too.

Q: You have been DJ'ing and playing live in the big cathedral in Copenhagen during the past two years. What is that like to play in a room and a place like that?

A: First of all you have the best natural reverb in the town. Moreover I like the quite atmosphere, and the fact that the music isn't drowning in loud talk and beers. There's room for contemplation, something that's all too rare nowadays. And then as a Dj I also like to play ambient, because there's no requirement of rhythm and danceability. This gives you another kind of musical freedom.

Q: Any new upcoming releases or gigs you want us to know about?

A: The releases I've allready mentionend above. I'm really looking forward to the Echocord compilation with 8 excklusive tracks from Deadbeat, Resoe etc.

Q: Your trackselection is exquisite! Any tracks you want to highlight in the mix?

A: Theo Parrish has been one of my favourite producers for a long time, I have to highlight his track. And of course the Levon Vincent track. I really like the way he keep dissolving the track with a remarkable sensibility.

ENJOY THE MIX!

NWS Cast #005 up now!!! Download :)

So NWS is back with a new mix from Sapriori. Winter has come and to keep you warm we went to Culture Box the 25th november to record a rather warm and moody houseset from the NWS resident Samuel André Madsen aka Sapriori. Omar S was supposed to play that evening, but without any warning what so ever he didn't show up, so we made it an intimate and special night in company with gooood friends from the CPH underground. Thanks to Marc & Mikkel, Simon Nathanael and last but not least David Havstein for making this a great night. To make this set Sapriori used 2x 1210's, A&H92 and a CDJ to play his own two tracks (see tracklist below). Enjoy and support the black wheel!

Q & A

Q: a few words about the mix?

A: my brother Simon Nathanael had just been playing a sweet minimal liveset so from there I wanted to make it a bit more dirty and housy. Turned out fine I think! I especially want to highlight the Javonntte track which is too cool for skool and the John Swing and Appointment guys keeping it real and analog ALL the way from jammin' to the vinyl cut. Look forward to those tracks on the mix and if you havn't bought the records I believe they will be classics and they belong in your bag! Takes balls to do what they do! ...and oh yes... the Sagat vocals on my track Comp Express I used without asking him... I am sure he won't mind :)

Q: how was the night

A: a big disappointment that Omar S didn't show up and while knowing nothing about his reasons for not coming I think that he shows to be a dick to his fans....especially because it is freezing outside and some people turned up only to be led down. But with that said we decided to make the best of it and as with all parties where good friends are together this one was really good too... The people who came and stayed all had a good time, so thanks for that! And it was the first time I was on the same flyer as my brother Simon so that was special too. :)

ENJOY THE MIX!! and leave feedback... it is appreciated!

NWS Cast #003 up for download!

When NWS did this interview it actually came out a bit longer than expected, but never the less we got some interesting things out of this experienced guy who has achieved many goals since he started spinning records in 2004. Throughout his youth, his main influences was repeatedly House and Hip Hop music, which went on to form his musically tastes today. From intimate spots to big room parties, Festivals and radio shows around Europe Dan M has played his deep and steady grooving DJ sets. Therefore we are proud to present a deep and groovy house mix with heavy influences from Chicago and Detroit made by Dan M! Enjoy!

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself

A: "Life is wonderful but I am a douche" is my new self-made slogan and sums up my life pretty good. I spend too much time with my computer and too little with my friends. I am passionate about love and music. A bit too much really..

Q: Are you working on any productions yourself these days?

A: Just finished an EP with my partner in crime James Braun and personally I am trying to finish a solo EP I have been working on a bit too long.

Q: Is it hard to find time to produce your own things?

A: Not really. One just gotta prioritize the music-making. Of course reality interferes sometimes and you gotta take care of business and make some money at a part time job or hustling the streets selling crack to kids.

Q: What are you working on these days?

A: Mix tapes, solo tracks, spreading the word and trying to fill up my calendar with gigs and things that make me happy.

Q: When you take a look in your gig-calendar you see several jobs here in Denmark, but also in Berlin. A gig in Berlin is for many DJ’s one of the biggest goals you can achieve. How do you feel about playing at famous venues like Cookies, Weekend Club etc.?

A: Been asked that question a lot. "How did you manage to get gigs outside Denmark". Well, Communication has been the key for me. It all started with throwing parties and booking international acts and DJs. Making friends across the borders and sharing the love for music. Regarding Berlin and the feeling of playing there well it cant compare to any other place I have ve DJ´ed . Both clubbing and DJing in Berlin is very special. The culture is completely different from for example Copenhagen.

People have another way of partying. They have the time and patience it takes for a DJ to do his/her thing no matter the time of day or night.

Q: What is your best DJ or live experience you have had in- or outside Denmark?

A: It is a difficult question cause I have some beautiful memories both inside and outside of Denmark. Latest was this years Distortion Festival. You should have been there!!

Q: What is your favorite club in Denmark?

A: Right now and for quite some time Dunkel has been my absolute favorite. Its the closest you get to Club Der Visionäre and Panoramabar my two favorite spots in Berlin.

Q: What have you intended with the NWS mix? Is it for clubbing, sitting at home or the headphones?

A: I have a very fragile mixer so my only real intension was to be as gentle as possible with the "buttons" so nothing would go wrong doing the recording. Otherwise I just started playing on a random sunday morning. Went quite slow cause thats how I like it best when Im mixing at home. Regarding the mixer only one channel crashed in one of the last mixes so I was lucky today.

Q: What did you use for recording this mix?

A: 2 x Technics 1210´s, 1 x Pioneer CDJ 800 and then a very fucked up Pioneer DJM 800. Ran it all thru Logic.

Q: Any tracks you want to highlight in the mix?

A: I think each track in the mix has their own qualities but I absolutely love the opening track from Theo Parrish. Sascha Dive has some killers on his latest album and really like the deep and dark sounding "The get out of the ghetto blues" he made. "Detroit" by Delano Smith I have been spinning endlessly and always keep a bunch of Delano tracks in my bag.

Q: What are your thoughts on Vinyl these days?

A: Vinyl sounds so damn good lets keep it alive!

DJ: Dan M

Tracklist:

1. Theo Parrish - Soul Control
2. Craig Alexander - Soul Revival
3. DJ Dealer - Chicago
4. Above Smoke - Burning
5. Innocent Lovers - Neophunk (Ryo Murakami Remix)

NWS Cast #002 up for download!!!

For the second NWS cast Romanian DJ Faster shows off his skills in an exceptional mix featuring Deep n' Groovy housemusic, of course mixed on 99% Vinyl!! NWS had a little chat with the young and busy DJ and producer Laurentiu Suciu aka. Faster.

Q: What do you do beside dj'ing?

A: Mastering in engineering on transport and telecomunications and producing

Q: So is it hard to find time for your productions?

A: Well not really. I can always find time to finish up my tracks

Q: What are you working on these days?

A: I`m working on finished my next ep. have 3 tracks done already. just need one more to complete my desire hehe. have like 3 or 4 labels in mind in my maillist. so let`s see who`s open for new ideas

Q: When Romania has been mentioned it's usually with the names Petre Inspirescu, Rhadoo, Raresh and Livio & Roby. What do you think of the scene in Romania and the export of electronic music from there?

A: I think the sound from our producers here in romania has been well known all over europe and this sound is bringing a new hype through-out clubbing. so, it`s a good thing like in every country with a huge amount of clubbing. romania wants to bring all the elites here :-) and export the best.

Q: It also seems that the mood in the productions coming from the majority of romanian dj's are more constant, the design of the tracks are more longstretched and minimal in it's approach.

A: Some of them have minimal trends, some of them have more more tribal and deep house moves. I am always trying to bring the oldschool sound in front.

Q: What is your favorite club in Romania if anyone should want to go there clubbing?

A: Studio Martin in Bucharest and Midi in Cluj-Napoca. Wicked sound, wicked vibe, best dh's, and a great set-up.

Q: What have you intended with the NWS mix? Is it for clubbing, sitting at home or the headphones?

A: Well it`s a little bit of both starting with a low deep house, then rising up a bit to a groovy session.

Q: What are your thoughts on Vinyl these days?

A: I hope everyone turns back to basics :-)

Q: What did you use for recording this mix?

A: I'm using a mixer xone 92 slide-o, two 1210's and 2 cdj 800's.

Q: Any tracks you want to highlight?

A: Not specially. But keep an eye out for my tracks hehe
